DDT measured directly from Palos Verdes seawater

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (Westminster, CA) has for the first time been able to directly monitor DDT and PCB concentrations in the water near Los Angeles. Based upon this sensitive analytical technique, the data strongly suggests that the coastal sediment off Palos Verdes is highly contaminated. The article states that this area is one of the most contaminated sites for chlorinated hydrocarbons in the country. The research also calls into question research done at Michigan State University which found that local bacteria are able to handle the contaminants. This new research also shows that the contaminants are entering the food chain.

Air-water gas exchange of organochlorine compounds in Lake Baikal, Russia

Article Abstract:

Distributions of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Lake Baikal, Russia, were determined by measuring the concentrations of these compounds from air and water samples collected in June 1991. Air concentrations of chlorinated bornanes, chlordanes and hexachlorobenzene were similar to those measured in the Arctic regions, but air concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexanes, DDTs and PCBs were similar to those in the Great Lakes region. Measurements from air samples in nearby Irkutsk were higher than those for Lake Baikal, suggesting regional transport and deposition of organochlorine pesticides and PCBs.

Organochlorine pesticides in ambient air of Belize, Central America

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the U.S. and Canada collected air samples from Belize, Central America in 1995 and 1996 to detect the presence of organochlorine pesticides revealing elevated levels of DDTs and aldrin/dieldrin. The presence of these compounds suggests that Central America is a potential source of the emissions of these particles.
