Designing in profits

Article Abstract:

John Hartley's book 'New Product Design for World Class Markets' stresses the role of good design in selling goods profitably. Simultaneous engineering and multidisciplinary teams ensure quality, but the customer's requirements are the ultimate source of ideas and the market, not the assembly line, the basis of design. Everything the customer sees, from package to manual, should be of high quality. That is how Germany and Japan have passed the UK in the market.

Survival of the fittest

Article Abstract:

Manufacturing requires a stable economy to reduce the risks of developing new technology; in an unstable economy, UK manufacturers reduce investment and use little new technology. This limits manufacturing growth, stunting the entire national economy. To catch up with overseas competitors, the UK must emphasize research and acquiring technology, higher levels of education, industry training, low-cost financing and a more stable economy.

Naturally cleaner

Article Abstract:

Natural gas is a very promising alternative to petrol and diesel. It could drastically reduce the 30 million tons of carbon dioxide, 6 million tons of carbon monoxide and other pollutants now spewed by vehicles in the UK. Natural gas makes engines last longer and run more quietly, although it requires a higher compression ratio, about 15:1. Most natural gas vehicles are now dual-use, although dedicated gas ones are in the design stage.
