Dissolved oxygen declines in the Hudson River associated with the invasion of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha)

Researchers from the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, NY studies 11-year dissolved oxygen declines from the tidal Hudson River to correlate the decline with the invasion of the zebra mussel in the river.

Emissions of nitrous oxide from a tidal, freshwater river, the Hudson River, New York

Article Abstract:

The Hudson River was tested to measure the amount of nitrous oxide formed, and was found to only contribute 1.3% of nitrous oxide to the atmosphere, much less than the 25% possible. The possibility exists for nitrification and dentrification bacterial transformations. The tidal freshwater portion of the Hudson extends 240 kilometers in New York State.

Biological control of eutrophication in lakes

Article Abstract:

The effect of grazing on lake eutrophication under conditions of increased planktonic algae growth is investigated by adding nutrients to two lakes with different food webs and measuring the resulting chlorophyll and blue-green algae biomass. The results showed that the lake with zooplanktovorous fish accumulated algal biomass. The lake with piscivorous fish accumulated less algal biomass. This indicates that grazing can control total algal biomass although it may not suppress nuisance algae.
