The 40 species of dust lichens live under the most ascetic conditions. They can survive without water or sunshine and increase their number without sex. They are generally found in the undersides of rock faces and the sheltered boles of trees.

Lichens live as long as their habitats, with those that live in timeless dwellings such as rock surfaces boasting of long life spans. Map lichens, for instance, can live for a maximum of 9,800 years, such as those on Baffin Island.

Issues are presented concerning the occurrence and growth of sunburst lichens. The lichens need to grown in areas rich in nutrients and tend to be found on old antlers, bones and on tree trunks coated in urine.
