Article Abstract:

The local government of Austin, TX, and Parsons Brinckerhoff Construction Services, Inc. formed a partnership to manage the conversion of the Bergstrom Air Force Base into the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The partnership, called the New Airport Project Team, together with other factors such as adequate financing provided by the city, community support and the city's use of non-taxable, revenue-based resources, combined to make the project a success. The construction is currently on schedule and is set to begin operations in the spring of the current year.

Return to carbide

Article Abstract:

The re-emergence of carbide hobs in the hobbing process is the most important technological development in gear hobbing after the launching of computer numerical control. In the 1970s, users of carbide were disappointed and discontinued its use because the carbides then were brittle and easily chipped. Breakthroughs in carbide technology such as the capability to produce small hob diameters and the development of micro fine grain carbides and protection coatings have produced strong carbide hobs.

Return of the master builders

Article Abstract:

Owners are once again opting for design build as opposed to design-bid-build. Design build involves the provision of both design and construction services by a single entity. Some of the reasons for this are the lack of attention to details of constructability and maintainability issues by architects and engineers, easier time management of project schedules and less legal ramifications, and changes are quicker to execute without conflict between designer and constructor.
