Linkage of bioaccumulation and biological effects to changes in pollutant loads in South San Francisco Bay

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA used data from 23 years of environmental change in San Francisco Bay to reveal improvements in sewage treatment processes since 1977 . Tne resident bivavlve, Macoma balthica, and metal loading data were used to establish links between the discharge, bioaccumulation and effects of a domestic sewage treatment plant.

Effect of tributary inflows on the distribution of trace metals in fine-grained bed sediments and benthic insects of the Clark Fork River, Montana

Article Abstract:

Spatial patterns of metal contamination in sediments and benthic insects in a river impacted by mining are defined by dilution of upstream metal sources by tributary inflows. This was gleaned from an investigation of the effect of tributary inflows on metal concentrations in bed and flood plain sediments and insects in the mine-impacted Clark For River in Montana. Large-scale dispersion of Cd, Cu and Pb in the river sediments was effectively described by a dilution-mixing model. Intensive sampling, meanwhile, revealed substantial, localized decreases in some metal concentrations immediately downstream of the inflows.
