Europeans clash over space station

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's member countries are having trouble agreeing on their commitment to the international space station, raising the possibility that the other partners will continue without the ESA. National space-budget problems and the outlook for specific hardware programs are described.

ERS-1 gives Europeans new views of the oceans

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's ERS-1 satellite has put Europe in the lead in oceanographic research with its three cloud-piercing radar instruments and ocean-temperature sensor. Primarily for research, its data is also used to track ships, monitor ocean ice and locate oil spills.

NASA plans to build the most complex scientific data base ever, designed to process and distribute unprecedented amounts of data from earth-observing satellites. The project could revolutionize science data systems as well as environmental science.
