Farming for export

Article Abstract:

It is widely believed within the US agricultural community that international negotiations on trade in agricultural products to be renewed by the World Trade Organization by the end of 1999 will be vital to securing the long-term economic strength of agriculture in the US. The first key issue for the next round of trade negotiations in agriculture will be whether further trade liberalization can be achieved. The second key issue will be dispute settlement procedures and agreements on health and safety regulation. It is vital that the US opens up its markets to imports from other countries and that it encourages other countries to accept its exports.

Nonpoint-source pollution defies U.S. water policy

Article Abstract:

Mines, construction sites and agricultural land are major nonpoint sources of pollution which continually contaminate the nation's waters. The Clean Water Act, which was amended in 1987, required states to identify rivers and lakes that would suffer from a decline of environmental quality without the implementation of nonpoint source pollution controls. Likewise, the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 instituted standards to ensure the nation's supply of contaminant-free drinking water. Sadly, both acts have failed to fulfill their goals due to agricultural nonpoint-source water pollution.
