Formation of iodo-trihalomethanes during disinfection and oxidation of iodide-containing waters

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology investigated the causes of taste and odor problems related to the disinfection of drinking water contaminated with iodide compounds. The process of disinfection leads to the formation of iodo-trihalomethanes and the type of disinfectant used contributes heavily to the taste and odor factor.

p-Toluenesulfonate in landfill leachates:leachability from foundry sands and anaerobic biodegradation

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology and the University of Konstanz, Germany identified a hardener in foundry wastes as source for p-toluenesulfonate in two landfill leachates in Switzerland and found that Comamonas testosteroni can degrade pTS in the landfill.

Potential inhibition of acid formation in pyritic environments using calcium sulfite byproduct

Article Abstract:

Researchers from The Ohio State University demonstrated that CaSO3 is produced when SO2 is scrubbed from flue gases during the burning of high sulfur coal. The scrubbing reaction is effective in reducing acid formation in coal refuse storage piles.
