Gallium sell-off threatens detector

Article Abstract:

Scientists at SAGE, an underground neutrino detector, refused to relinquish their 60 tons of ultrapure gallium to the ministry of fuel and power- production industries. Science minister Vladimir Fortov delayed the transfer. SAGE officials suspect the government plans to sell the gallium abroad.

Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Chemical Industries has led the world in developing the use of gallium nitride in lasers and light emitting diodes. The company has overtaken research by much larger institutions because it focuses on the problem, has a simple hierarchy, and is willing to gamble.

Stacked organic light-emitting diodes in full color

Article Abstract:

Organic electroluminescence is approaching the point of being economically practical for use in portable electronic devices. Methods for using light-emitting diodes to produce full-color displays are discussed.
