Giving language skills a boost; a new training program that uses computer games to help language-impaired children hear the fast elements of speech improves their ability to understand and respond to language

Article Abstract:

Experimental psychologist Paula Tallal and neuroscientist Michael Merzenich and their research team report that specific computer games can help some language-impaired children improve their language skills. The computer games train the children to respond to the fast-paced sounds of spoken speech.

A new face for the glutamate receptor

Article Abstract:

New research indicates that the glutamate receptor has three segments that cross the cell membrane, instead of the four found in other neurotransmitter membranes. The new model has implications for stroke or seizure drug therapy as well as in the study of learning and memory.

Researchers nail down leptin receptor

Article Abstract:

Three research teams have produced strong evidence that the receptor cloned by Louis Tartaglia in Dec 1995 is in fact the receptor for leptin, the weight-control hormone product of the mouse obesity gene 'ob.' Tartaglia's team had been unsure they had the right receptor.
