Going vertical

Article Abstract:

The big drive makers, such as Seagate Technology and Hitachi are shipping hard drives with the new architecture known as perpendicular or vertical recording, which replaces the venerable longitudinal recording. A bit is magnetized perpendicular to the plane of the disk rather than in line with it, allowing even smaller bits to be packed many times tighter, thereby raising density up to 10-fold.

Jet engines: Big squeeze

Article Abstract:

A brief description is presented on the working knowledge of Jet engines that generate thrust by pushing air backward. Air steaming over it must travel farther and thus faster than air passing underneath the flat bottom, in both the cases, as the wing top is curved.
