Growing forests one village at a time

Article Abstract:

Forests are necessary sources of both money and resources for people who live in or near them, making it necessary for conservation projects to bridge the ideological divide between forest protection and forest production. The conservation of the future finds a balance by working with local communities to set up strategies for sustainable use, using an approach that targets both conservation and development.

A tale of two lakes

Article Abstract:

Lake Naivasha and Lake Bogoria are freshwater lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley, each created by its own geological forces and each with its own unique ecosystem. A long-running Earthwatch-supported research project, which explores the environmental changes that threaten the valley, is changing the way local and international communities think about these two extremely different lakes.

Does the lion really sleep tonight?

Article Abstract:

An Earthwatch member shares fond memories of a particular night on Lawrence Frank's hyena research project in the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya, when she and a teammate feared they were being stalked by a lion. To their relief, they realized the intruder was only a Cape buffalo, which although notorious for its temper, is not a stalker by nature.
