Heeding the Warning in Biodiversity's Basic Law

Article Abstract:

Scientists have been studying the mathematical relationship between species diversity and land area since the 19th century. However, both mathematical and theoretical problems have been discovered. A new theory replaces the log-normal model with self-similarity. It may be that no single model can predict species diversity at all scales.

Geologists debate ancient life and fractured crust

Article Abstract:

Kevin Peterson believes that evidence of the diversification of animal phyla in the Cambrian will not be found in the fossil record, but in the study of developmental biology. Theoretical and field geologists disagree whether rocks were simply split by low-angle faults or by some underlying mechanism.

Criteria for testing character displacement

Article Abstract:

The methodology and conclusions of a study of character displacement in three-spine sticklebacks are questioned. The work examined morphological changes in one species that took place only in the proximity of a closely related species. A reply is included.
