High-speed network will link Russia's far-flung universities

A $130-million initiative funded by US businessman George Soros and the Russian government will establish university-based Internet centers throughout Russia that will allow researchers to exchange data at a rate that is 4 times faster than what is currently possible.

Science agency hit with 55% cut

The Russian government is cutting the budget of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research by 55% in a move to eradicate an $18.5 billion budget deficit. Funding for the Russian Academy of Sciences will fall 25%.
