Analysis of medical informatics development efforts reveals that there is a need to identify patient data elements in producing a centralized patient record database for use in measuring costs, clinical outcomes and benchmarking. Medical informatics is relevant because it provides management with information pertaining to improvements in the cost-effectiveness of medical services.

Analysis of medical technology firm information management practices reveals that there is a statistically significant market reaction to detailed announcements and announcements that receive extensive press coverage compared with preannouncement. The study recommends that firms engaging in new medical product development should favor detailed announcements to preannouncements.
