Analysis of medical informatics development efforts reveals that there is a need to identify patient data elements in producing a centralized patient record database for use in measuring costs, clinical outcomes and benchmarking. Medical informatics is relevant because it provides management with information pertaining to improvements in the cost-effectiveness of medical services.
