Indianapolis faces $2-billion sewer bill

Article Abstract:

The city of Indianapolis, IN, is opposed to new state regulations that prohibit the city's treatment facility to discharge combined sewer and storm water flows into the White River without secondary treatment during storms. The city's Dept of Public Works estimates the new laws would cost the city as much as $2 billion over the next decade. The city uses the Belmont treatment plant in removing sediments and floating debris from excess flows. The screened water does not undergo further treatment because the plant's secondary capacity is just half of its primary treatment capacity.

Soft on quality

Article Abstract:

Proper choice of software packages for quality management and for compliance with quality standards such as the BS EN ISO 9000 standard is important. The development of the quality system has several steps and various kinds of software packages can be utilized for each step. Products such as QMap, QDM, Process Modeller and FlowMap offer techniques for producing charts that describe flow-through processes. The final steps will require the use of assessment and audit management software.

Plumbing the quality of a sewer system

Article Abstract:

Phoenix, AZ, hired the local office of Montgomery Watson Americas Inc. to assess the condition of the city's corroded sewer pipes. Closed-circuit television inspection revealed that aside from corrosion, other defects like holes and collapsed sections were present. The pipes were either rehabilitated or replaced depending on the costs involved and the need to maintain system capacity. The 14 projects are expected to be completed by the middle of 1996.
