Industrial ecology
Article Abstract:
Industrial ecology is an alternative approach that utilizes systems engineering and an ecological approach to reducing environmental impact by integrating the producing and consuming segments of design, production, and usage of products and services. Research and development priorities for the 21st century should include the development of a life-cycle analysis and alternative manufacturing processes for manufacturing products, the recycling and use of recyclable products, and the use of economically recoverable or environmentally dischargeable chemical products.

Variation of surface charge density in monoclonal bacterial populations: implications for transport through porous media
Article Abstract:
A study examines the forced convection of a monodisperse, monoclonal suspension of bacteria through a uniform, saturated porous medium. Results of bench-scale column studies reveal that the affinity of the bacteria for the 40-micronm borosilicate glass beads decrease with distance traveled through the column. Intrapopulational differences in bacterial surface characteristics could have influenced cell/collector affinity.
