Into the abyss: Science meets entertainment at the bottom of the sea

Article Abstract:

Lost City was one of the 10 hydrothermal vent sites that became filming locations for James Cameron's 3-D IMAX movie 'Aliens of the Deep'. The project involved two oceans, two ships, two Russian Mir submersibles capable of 6000-meter depths, two acrylic-doomed Deep Rover submersibles capable of 1000-meter depths, 14 scientist, 40 dives, and a slew of crew members for both ships and the production.

A patch for love

Article Abstract:

University of Mississippi biologist Rebecca Holberton is developing a patch that can deliver hormones designed to improve reproduction of endangered birds. The patch, which can be attached under the wings of birds, transmits the hormones through the skin and can be easily made with Band-Aids.

Silicone safe

Article Abstract:

A report released by the Institute of Medicine found the incidence of cancer in women with silicone breast implants is the same for the rest of the population. The report also added that mothers with implants can breastfeed their babies since no evidence of toxicity was found in breast milk.
