Investing in education

Article Abstract:

Special education programs such as the Shapemakers Lecture Tour and the new Training in Aluminium Application Technologies (TALAT) provide information to students and engineers about the properties and use of aluminium in engineering, design and architecture. The TALAT education program offers useful educational materials for engineers and technologists focusing on machining, forming, casting and structural design. The program caters to the evolving technological needs of the engineers.

A war of words

Article Abstract:

The structural use of aluminium in building aluminium bodied cars has gained momentum since 1992. To counteract the rising aluminium industry, the steel industry has decided to built the lightest possible steel bodied car by 1994. The Alcoa study shows that aluminium bodied cars use 25% less energy and gain a life cycle energy advantage after 14,000 miles, consuming 1,230 fewer liters compared to bodies made of steel.
