Japan picks first centers of excellence

Japan's Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture awarded $21 million in grants to six specialized research groups, aiming to build them into world-class research centers. Five scientific centers contained within single universities and a broad statistical database group were named.

The moon looms large in Japan's plans

Article Abstract:

Japan is taking a leading role in lunar exploration by backing two international lunar missions. The 1997 LUNAR-A mission will orbit the moon and send three penetrators to its surface. The Selenological and Engineering Explorer will be launched in 2003.

Chiba's heavy-ion accelerator battles cancer and critics

Article Abstract:

Japan's $326-million heavy-ion accelerator, which performs cancer therapy, is very controversial. Critics charge that the therapy is unproven. Many are also concerned that the clinical trials that will be run there will not be evaluated properly.
