L'Ambiance Plaza: what have we learned
Article Abstract:
The American Society of Civil Engineers discussed the impact of the L'Ambiance Plaza's collapse on the construction industry during their Oct 1991 Orlando, FL, convention. Engineers propose the upgrading of the conduct of investigations of major structural disasters and increasing the engineer's authority during construction. They criticize the disregard for safety and sound engineering principles and emphasized the importance of a clear delineation of responsibilities for all parties concerned. They also stressed stability as a crucial design factor in construction.

A corps chief looks at 'Rising Tide.' (book on 1927 Mississippi Valley flood)(includes review of book)
Article Abstract:
John Barry's book 'Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America' engagingly recounts the massive flooding that ravaged the Mississippi Valley. The author identified the heros, villains and victims, and discussed the changes that resulted from the catastrophe, specifically the reformation of the US Corps of Engineers. Learning from its lessons, the agency was able to successfully transform itself after the fiasco of the great flood. Barry's tome is highly recommended for engineers, who can learn some important insights from reading it.

Seismic solutions for steel frame buildings
Article Abstract:
The 1994 earthquake in Northridge, CA, resulted in significant damage to connections used in moment-resisting steel frames. Researchers have since then tested various connections for diverting seismic forces. These include the use of vertical side plates, fillet-welded construction and the absence of a direct connection between the beam and columns. Some engineers have also suggested implementing the cover plate system to force plastic deformation in beams away from the column face.
