Life cycle assessment: a second opinion
Article Abstract:
There are many problems associated with life cycle assessment (LCA), including cost and data availability, but it is a very important aspect of determining the environmental impact of products and technologies. LCAs are unlikely to be used routinely at present for applications such as eco-labelling, as the databases available are not comprehensive enough, and even with more extensive data, LCAs will probably not be used to determine a public policy on every single product. However, using reduced scope LCAs can still be very effective in helping politicians, companies and consumers make important choices.

A cabinet-level EPA: when?
Article Abstract:
President Clinton has promised to set up a White House Office on Environmental Policy (OEP), which would deal with environmental conflicts among federal agencies, when Senate approval is given to the Glenn bill, which has provisions to make EPA a cabinet-level US Department of the Environment (USDE). At the same time, the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) would be abolished, with its funding going to EPA or USDE. EPA believes that a USDE could take responsibility for the work of CEQ, but there is considerable opposition from within CEQ to its closure.
