Lip gloss: Is it possible to have a standard product covering virtually all automotive contact sealing applications?
Article Abstract:
The world market for automobile gaskets is estimated at around $3 billion. Industry tends to use technically over-engineered systems, which result in higher costs. A gasket material has been introduced which may offer savings in both material and manufacturing costs. Expanded graphite has been used successfully, but it can be brittle, however when synthesized with Kevlar, its operating envelope is extended. The new material combines the strength and durability of Kevlar with the sealing abilities and temperature performance of graphite.

Pressing business
Article Abstract:
The increasing growth in the powder metallurgy (PM) industry is triggered by its contribution to the automotive industry and it is expected that PM products will also be used in electrical devices and household appliances. The world's largest producer of PM components is GKN Sinter Metals, a subsidiary of GKN. GKN Sinter Metals expanded its operations by acquiring three PM part producers in the third quarter of 1998. The company uses ferrous powdered metals as the main raw material in its manufacturing processes.

Supply & demand
Article Abstract:
UK's biggest steel processing and supply company British Steel Distribution (BSD) has designed its manufacturing centers based on the specific requirements of its customers instead of the usual multiprocessing line. BSD Managing Director Peter Wheelen claims that such an arrangement results in better levels of service while reducing operating costs. At present, BSD has set up its service centers for the automobile and appliance industries.
