Requiem for a heavyweight at meeting on fusion reactors

Article Abstract:

The proposed $10 billion fusion power test-bed ITER is facing cancellation because of financial problems and technical criticism. During a recent international meeting of fusion experts, ITER received little support, and Japanese scientists offered designs for a much smaller project.

Physicists advance into biology

Article Abstract:

Biologists are increasingly welcoming physicists' perspectives on biological systems. Physicists strive to identify universal, mechanistic laws that may be helpful in understanding subtle biological processes. Several physics-driven biological research efforts are described.
