Geologic research indicates that the polar ice sheet in West Antarctica is melting, and may have the potential for raising the sea level. However, scientists believe that the rate of increase will be slow enough to avoid immediate danger to seacoast cities.

Issues are presented concerning the causes and growth of the Gulf of Mexico's oxygen-depleted bottom waters. The influence of the 1.6-million metric tons of nitrogen carried into the Gulf annually by the Mississippi River is discussed.
