Production and loss of dissolved gaseous mercury in coastal seawater
Article Abstract:
The production of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM), which is mainly composed of elemental mercury, Hg0, seems to take place in the presence of sunlight. Laboratory studies of coastal waters taken from the Gulf of Mexico reveal that substrates such as inorganic Hg(II) greatly enhance DGM production. DGM production, however, stops when substrate is exhausted. The rapid decline in DGM levels, afterwards, is probably caused by the oxidation of Hg0.
