Methodological issues in information technology assessment

Article Abstract:

A brief look at development of technology assessment (TA) concepts and methodologies reveals that a new TA paradigm has been shaped by the increasing importance of information technology (IT). Since TA has now become a 'participative research process' TA practitioners need to identify the gap between social perceptions and representations of new technology, identify the involved parties, create alternative plans and set up social experiments before deploying a new IT.

Life-cycle-analysis: a methodology to analyse ecological consequences within a technology assessment study

Article Abstract:

The use of life-cycle analysis (LCA) improves a technological assessment because it looks at a technology's ecological effects on 'from cradle to grave.' Specifically, LCA considers the vertical and horizontal processes from raw material sourcing, production and use to waste deposition. Although no standard LCA method exists, it basically consists of inventory, environmental assessment and valuation.
