Microanalysis of museum aerosols to elucidate the soiling of paintings: case of the Correr Museum, Venice, Italy
Article Abstract:
An indoor source of calcium-rich particles, possibly the deterioration of the interior plaster walls, was detected in a microanalysis of individual aerosol particles in the Correr Museum, Venice, Italy, explaining the soiling of paintings. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray measurement were applied in determining the chemical composition and associated diameter of airborne particles collected during two sampling sessions at the museum.

Field study and numerical simulation of subslab ventilation systems
Article Abstract:
The University of Berkeley's Indoor Environment Program investigated the effect of a subslab ventilation system (SSV) on radon emissions in basements. Researchers measured pressure fields resulting from subslab ventilation in six basements, all with different combinations of soil and aggregate. Research results showed that subslab pressure fields could be improved significantly by increasing aggregate permeability, by sealing cracks in slabs and by digging pits beneath SSV exhaust pipes.

Effectiveness of a passive subslab ventilation system in reducing radon concentrations in a home
Article Abstract:
A new approach for reducing indoor radon concentrations in houses and basements is presented. It involves the installation of passive subslab ventilation systems, also called passive stacks. Measurements of radon concentrations resulting from furnace usage in homes with passive stack and in homes without passive stack over a one-year period showed that homes where passive stack systems were operating had significantly lower radon concentrations.
