Microbes hint at a mechanism behind punctuated evolution

Evolutionary biologist Richard Lenski of Michigan State University devised an experiment that allowed him to examine the evolution of a strain of Eschericia coli bacteria over 10,000 generations. Bacterial cell size evolved in sudden spurts, supporting theories of punctuated equilibrium.

A clearer view of why plants make haze
Article Abstract:
Some plants emit large quantities of hydrocarbons for unknown reasons, which contribute to photochemical smog and ozone formation. Tom Sharkey and Eric Singaas's experiments suggest that emissions of isoprene help protect some plants from exposure to high temperatures.
