Muscular dystrophies: diseases of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex

Article Abstract:

One form of muscular dystrophy, Duchenne MD, had been known to be caused by a defective gene that produces the protein dystrophin. Now other forms of MD have been linked to other proteins in the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex, which connects the inner cytoskeleton with the extracellular matrix.

Global climate and infectious disease: the cholera paradigm

Article Abstract:

Cholera is an excellent model for research on how environmental factors affect infectious diseases. Integrating spatial, epidemiological and ecological data on cholera could lead to predictive models of cholera epidemics. A survey of the history of cholera pandemics is given.

Ulcers as infectious diseases

Article Abstract:

Research evidence indicates that the Helicobacter pylori bacteria is the cause of ulcers, not excess acid secretion. Recurrence of ulcers in patients treated with antibiotics was significantly lower than in patients treated with drugs that suppress stomach-acid secretion.
