Naked quasars get dressed
Article Abstract:
Hubble telescope images produced by John Bahcall seemed to display quasars not surrounded by the expected galaxies, but analyses by astrophysicists Kim McLeod and George Rieke imply that the galaxies are there. Bahcall disputes some of the analysis, but is open to the idea of a galaxy for every quasar.

When a habitat is not a home: many ecologists say conservation plans designed to ease tensions between landowners and environmentalists are not grounded in good science
Article Abstract:
Conservation biologists warn that many of the Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs) developed under the Endangered Species Act are not based on good science. Some may even be doing more harm than good. HCPs give developers incentives to preserve habitat, but the preservation plans need improvement.

Can deep bacteria live on nothing but rocks and water?
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered bacteria in deep aquifers of the Columbia River Basin that survive without depending on photosynthesis for energy. The source of their energy appears to be hydrogen generate by a reaction between basalt and ground water.
