Hyman, a top researcher in molecular neurobiology at Harvard, will become the permanent director of NIMH, after two years of searching. Hyman's agenda includes an intramural-program review, a de-emphasis on large labs in favor of small work groups, and an emphasis on researcher-initiated grants.

New Zealand's leap into gene therapy

Brain disease expert Matthew During conducted a gene-therapy trial on two children from the US with Canavan disease, a progressive illness that destroys the nerve's myelin sheathing in the brain. The study illustrated the difficulty of regulating gene therapy internationally.
