Magainin Pharmaceuticals' founder Michael A. Zasloff discovered magainins, animal-derived peptides that can kill a wide variety of disease-causing microorganisms. Because magainins do not act like traditional antibiotics or antifungal agents, bacteria cannot resist them.

Researchers have found that SCID, or the lack of an immune system, has a genetic cause. Cases of SCID resulting from a defective X chromosome are caused by a genetic abnormality that produces the gamma-chain subunit of the receptor for the cytokine interleukin-2.
