Novel center seeks to add spark to origins of life

Article Abstract:

NASA established NSCORT to coordinate the work of five leading life-origin researchers and their students. Understanding life's origin on earth is important to studying life in space. The research of Jeffrey Bada, Gustaf Arthenius, Gerald Joyce, Stanley Miller and Leslie Orgel is described.

Latin America's elite looks north for scientific partners

Article Abstract:

Collaboration with scientists of other countries is vital for Latin American scientists. Collaboration provides access to information, technology and monetary resources that they might not find elsewhere. Obstacles to North-South scientific collaboration are discussed.

Scientists who fund themselves

Article Abstract:

A few scientists use their own funds to pay for some or all of their research. Their motivation includes freedom from grantsmanship bureaucracy and the ability to pursue their own research interests. One disadvantage is that self-funding hampers career advancement.
