Nuclear Strongholds in Peril
Article Abstract:
The economic instability of Russia has a direct relation to the increased threat of nuclear proliferation. As many as 50,000 Russian nuclear weapons experts will need jobs over the next few years, and they may be tempted to take positions with rogue countries seeking to become nuclear powers. Also, the young, underpaid guards of research facilities are vulnerable to bribes and show little concern for proliferation problems.

The wave of Jewish Russian immigrants into Israel during the latter stages of the 1980 has provided Israel with a large group of researchers who have brought high technology to the region. The technological research and advancements in Israel have made the nation respectable in this discipline. Israel has been able to inexpensively get these researchers to work in their laboratories.

The crumbling economy in Russia has meant that there is little funding for scientific research. New Science Minister Mikhail Kirpichnikov is attempting to keep Russian research interests alive. However, the challenges faced by the ailing nation despite the triumphs of the past. Kirpichnikov has a difficult task facing him.
