Temporal trend of organochlorine marine pollution indicated by concentrations in mussels, semipermeable membrane devices, and sediment

Article Abstract:

Researchers from Sweden described the trends occurring in organochlorine pollution by testing samples of mussels, semipermeable membranes and sediments.

Occurence, sedimentation, and spatial variations of organochlorine contaminants in settling particulate matter and sediments in the northern part of the Baltic Sea

Article Abstract:

Sediment trap sampling of settling particulate matter was undertaken in both coastal and offshore stations in Bothnian Bay and Bothnian Sea in the northern Baltic Sea to determine the vertical movement of organochlorine contaminants. Concentrations of organochlorine contaminants in the offshore samples were ten times higher than samples from the coastal stations. This is due to the higher carbon concentration of settling particulate matter in offshore areas. Additional experiments for seasonal variations showed the same results, with offshore samples having higher concentrations of organochlorine contaminants than their coastal counterparts. Spatial difference showed the sediments of Bothnian Sea having higher concentration of contaminants that samples in the Bothnian Bay.

Temporal monitoring of organochlorine compounds in seawater by semipermeable membranes following a flooding episode in Western Europe

Article Abstract:

Researchers from Sweden discovered an increase in concentration of PCBs, DDTs, chlordane, hexachlorobenzene and other organochlorine compounds in the open sea during the January 1995 flood in central and western Europe which deposited a significant amount of contaminated freshwater into the Swedish coast.
