Peso's collapse signals grave economic woes

Article Abstract:

The fall of the Mexican peso symbolizes recession of uncertain severity in Mexico. The peso had been one of the most stable currencies in the world. For most of 1994 it traded between 29 and 32 U.S. cents. The government devalued the exchange rate of Peso on December by 14%, thus bringing down the rate to 25 U.S. cents. This rate fell further to 17 cents by January 1995, signalling the crisis. Unless long term structural problems in jobs, income and infrastructure are solved, the crisis will keep occurring.

NAFTA sets course for U.S./Canada trade

Article Abstract:

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is likely to reduce trade between Canada and the United States and increase trade between Canada and Mexico in the long term. In 1994, Canada's trade with Mexico increased to $5 bil but it remains low compared to its trade with the United States. Though Canada and U.S. will continue to be primary trading partners, trade will decline relative to trade with Mexico. This trend did not start soon after NAFTA was signed due to a sudden spurt in U.S./Mexican trade.

Will Mexico's economy rebound from reforms?

Article Abstract:

Mexico must develop alternative economic policies to recover from its current economic slump. The government, for instance, must search for other sources of funding for social and economic development programs. Bilateral trade agreement with South America, Europe and Asia can also be established while minimum wage must be raised to improve citizens' purchasing power and increase domestic consumer spending.
