Photoassisted degradation of dye pollutants. 3. Degradation of the cationic dye rhodamine B in aqueous anionic surfactant/TiO2 dispersions under visible light irradiation: evidence for the need of substrate adsorption on TiO2 particles

Article Abstract:

The rhodamine B (RhB) chromophore can be photodegraded on the TiO2 particle surface under visible light illumination. This can be done through a process involving electron injection sensitization of TiO2. The preadsorption on the surface of TiO2 particles is precondition for skillful photodegradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. The degradation happens at the particle surface and not in the solution bulk. Adsorption and photodegradation of RhB are greatly intensified by adding the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate to the aqueous TiO2 dispersions.
