Article Abstract:

A survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit on the European motor industry's manufacturing operations showed Nissan leading in terms of having achieved world-class levels of productivity in its Sunderland, UK facility. Results would also show that the UK operations of other Japanese carmakers are also highly ranked, including Honda's Swindon plant and Toyota at Burnaston, UK. According to the report, many of these plants achieved high productivity by adopting new manufacturing processes, such as increased automation and the use of modular construction.

Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. (3M) has transformed from a one-product firm to a 60,000-product manufacturer primarily due to its strong sense of innovation. 3M intensified this approach when it spun off computer graphics and software into a separate subsidiary called Imation, thereby increasing its focus on core technology activities. The firm is currently expanding its R&D network by seeking non-competitor companies to build an internal information-sharing structure.

Chief executive of the Engineering and Marine Training Authority, Michael Sanderson, emphasized the roles of the association to promote developments in the field of engineering and to manage properly various training centers. He also sought to collaborate with engineering industry leaders to set the standards necessary for engineering services and products. Furthermore, Sanderson stressed the importance of encouraging students to consider engineering as a career option.
