Good wood: can timber certification save the rain forest?

Although the Rainforest Alliance's Smart Wood Program rewards timber companies for practicing environmentally sustainable and social responsible policies, the program may be too little too late to save the rain forests. Most tropical lumber is cut for agriculture and cattle ranching.
