Salvaged sand: An Indiana road contractor finds an economic use for waste foundry sand, discarded until recently as environmentally unsafe

Article Abstract:

Waste foundry sand (WFS), a by-product of the foundry casting process, can be used in road construction. Auburn Foundry Inc has used WFS in a road construction project, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), and recovered 15 months' operating capacity, saving nearly $1 million in disposal costs. Laboratory tests showed that Auburn WFS posed little environmental risk.
