Satellite offers a view of the coolest objects in the cosmos

Article Abstract:

The ISO, to be launched Nov 10, 1995, will observe the cool gas clouds that give birth to stars and galaxies. A liquid-helium cooling system will make the telescope cooler than its targets, to avoid a blotting effect by their infrared glow. It will able to focus on a particular object for 10 hours.

Linacs offer straight line to the future

Article Abstract:

X-ray scientist agreed to develop linear accelerators coupled with free- electron lasers as the next generation of intense x-ray sources, to replace the current circular electron storage rings. The new design's much shorter electron pulses will produce a great increase in x-ray intensity.
