Save the helium
Article Abstract:
The Helium Privatization Act of 1996, which has been signed into law by Pres Clinton in an effort to shrink the federal budget, is being criticized for its lack of foresight. Although the strategic helium reserve 'owes' the US Treasury $1.4 billion, the debt is but an accounting formality that could be written off without hurting the federal budget. By eliminating the reserve, the federal government will soon find itself competing at the gaseous helium market as the country needs the gas for research on space and the military, and superconductivity, as well as for fiber-optic production. The government should turn over the reserve to a form of private partnership involving helium suppliers organized to preserve and administer the gas.

Many public servants, such as the National Science Foundations's Herman Lewis, should be honored rather than discredited for their responsible and judicious decisions that have furthered science. Lewis's approval of yeast research in 1978 resulted in an inexpensive vaccine against hepatitis B.
