Saving face
Article Abstract:
KPFF Consulting Engineers was tasked with restoring the exterior of the University of Washington Medical Center's East Wing. The firm used the strategy of surface removal which consisted of removing the structure's ceramic tiles and glass-reinforced ceramic cladding, replacing damaged wall insulation and installation of a new covering material. A belt-and-suspenders type of aluminum cladding was chosen as this was compatible with the structure's existing metal-stud system. There was minimal disruption of hospital operations during the restoration.
