Article Abstract:

Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have created earth's first metallic hydrogen, a state of the element known to exist under high pressures on Jupiter and Saturn. The result brings new insights into the chemistry of the giant planets. The experimental methodology is described.

A fickle sun could be altering earth's climate after all

Article Abstract:

Research using computer models of the atmosphere is providing evidence to support the theory that changes in the intensity of solar radiation are related to climatic changes. A link between the sunspot cycle and temperature changes in the atmosphere was first reported in 1987.

Volcanologists ponder a spate of deaths in the line of duty

Article Abstract:

Twelve volcanologists have died in eruptions since 1991. Some scientists want safety guidelines to be used during field work. Others, including one who was badly injured in eruption, advise caution in applying too many restrictions in an overreaction to the problem.
