The changing face of CD-ROMs
Article Abstract:
The Internet has eclipsed CD-ROM as an interactive publishing platform, but CD-ROM is still a practical medium for specific projects. The costs of publishing on CD-ROM are prohibitive, compared to those of the Internet. Many publishers are producing hybrid offerings, such as a periodically distributed CD combined with a Web site that offers more information as well as graphics and links to other related sites. The Launch music magazine makes extensive use of sound, video and animation. The magazine's Web site provides users with a personalized profile so that when they receive the bimonthly CD the opening screen directs them to content that will be of interest to them. Competition from the Internet has forced some publishers to abandon CD-ROM altogether. CDs do have the advantage of being able to mix video, audio and animation without the bandwidth considerations of the Internet.

Social messages and cultural information in the clothing of Southern Lao women
Article Abstract:
A study of the clothing choices of Southern Lao women residing in Rochester, New York reveals that they identify clothing with social status, cultural ethnicity, wealth, age, and occupation. Women with detailed knowledge of the techniques of cloth production, such as weavers, identify and sort clothes according to their weaving techniques while non-weavers sort them according to the material and price. However, all Southern Lao women categorize clothes according to their social and cultural affinities and generally disregard patterns and design while making clothing choices.
