Modern methods of genetic research have produced evidence that there are many factors in addition to geographic isolation that cause new species to develop. These factors include the intervention of a third organism, variations in fertilization and hybridization.

Proteins 'clock' the origins of all creatures - great and small

Molecular biologist Russell F. Doolittle and his colleagues have devised a 'molecular clock' to determine when groups split off from common ancestors. The clock indicates that eukaryotes split off from prokaryotes about 2 billion years ago.
