Telomeres, telomerase and cancer

Article Abstract:

Telomerase, an enzyme than lengthens telomeres, may be used to treat cancer. Telomerase is made mostly of protein, but it also has one RNA molecule. It is present in some cancers, but not in many normal cells, which means that drugs that harm it may be able to kill cancer cells but not normal ones.

Advancing current treatments for cancer

Article Abstract:

Researchers are trying to develop treatments that kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells or producing side effects. Surgery and radiation therapy may fail to destroy all cancer cells, while chemotherapy has serious side effects. Some physicians use a combination of the three treatments.
