Cell biologist Klausner has attempted a complete overhaul of the NCI in his first year. He has consolidated basic-science programs, increased support of extramural programs begun full reviews of clinical research and turned the so-called bypass budget into a clear five-year strategic plan.

Klausner follows own advice at NCI

Article Abstract:

Klausner intends to completely restructure NCI by Oct 1, 1995. He intends to create a structure in which administrators serve the needs of scientists. NCI staff are generally supportive of Klausner's plans, but some are anxious about probable program and job changes.

Klausner's unconventional 'field station' in Seattle

Article Abstract:

Some scientists were surprised by Klausner's wholehearted support for a research project involving the transplantation of human genes into yeast cells to develop models of human cancer cells. This 'Seattle Project' may become a 'drug-discovery think tank.'
